Sweeten Life Up with Stevia

I came across stevia a few years ago while researching diet and fitness information. I found it to be a good replacement for sugar and artificial sweeteners, using it in things like coffee and oatmeal without adding extra calories. This is great for someone wishing to stick to a low glycemic diet.

Stevia is native to Paraguay and has been used as a sweetener, flavor enhancer and in medicinal teas for centuries. More recently, it is widely used in Japan, South America and parts of Asia. It is too bad, that as it has gained popularity lately, it has been hit with some bad press. Reading many articles and studies about stevia, you would be hard pressed to conclude that it is not safe. At the very least you can conclude that it is much safer than any artificial sweetener out there.

I use the liquid form of stevia every day.  Here’s a quick and easy treat, mix equal parts of plain yogurt and cottage cheese with several drops of stevia and vanilla extract. This makes a delicious high protein snack that will not drive up your blood sugar. Enjoy!!!
